SCR Power Controllers + Pyrometers for Critical Sensing and Control

Posted September 19, 2023 by Marc Shaaf

Advanced Energy's complete solution for improving thermal processes often includes a combination of products for measuring, controlling, and regulating critical temperatures:
  • The pyrometer is used for measuring the temperature.
  • The PI 6000 (pyrometer accessory) is used for controlling temperature values/setpoints.
  • The SCR power controller is used for regulating the temperature.
The versatility of this setup enables its application across numerous applications in metal and glass production, such as:

1.  A customer has an oven that needs to be kept at a precise temperature. The pyrometer measures the temperature of the heating coil or the furnace lining and forwards the measurement values to the controller (PI 6000). The controller now compares the actual values as well as the setpoint values, generating a control signal for the thyristor controller. This signal orchestrates precise adjustments to the heating output, ensuring the desired temperature is maintained.

2.  A customer must carefully adjust several intermediate temperatures in a furnace so that the components inside won’t be destroyed or damaged while being heated. The pyrometer measures the temperature and passes it on to the controller. The controller needs to be adjusted in a way that the temperature does not rise too quickly in the oven. This means that the controller regulates the temperature rise by permanently limiting the actual value so that a temperature increase corresponds to the set °C/time.

3.  Some customers have products that need to be cooled down after the hardening process by built-in zones that hold a certain temperature to limit material damage or to keep material properties such as 'hardness' or 'toughness' are within predefined values.

4.  Consider an application where products are pushed through an oven for processing. These products are measured by the pyrometer at the furnace exit (not in the furnace). This measured value is relayed to the controller (PI 6000) and compared to the setpoint. If products emerge colder than desired, the SCR power controller intervenes and adjusts the oven temperature.

5.  In complex setups such as conveyor ovens (tunnel ovens) with multiple heating zones, the need for uniformity is paramount. Industries such as flat glass production or plastic membrane processing rely on consistent temperatures across the entire width. Several pyrometers/PI 6000/SCR power controller zones can be set up so that the actual product has a homogeneous temperature over the entire width.
