Coming Soon – MB60 Class II Input Models | Medical-Grade Internal Power Supply

Posted June 08, 2018

SL Power Electronics announces a new group of Coming Soon products – The Class II variant of the MB60 Product Family. These units will be available in 12, 15, 18, 24, 36 and 48Vdc output versions, delivering up to 60 Watts of reliable and efficient power.

The MB60 caters to medical applications demanding versatile power supplies that excel across all measures of performance. This product family delivers remarkable power density that is 25% higher than competing 2’x3’ products – making it the ideal solution for 1U applications. Another notable feature is the MB60’s wide operational temperature range of -10°C to +80°C. In addition, these models do not require a heating element to turn on at -40°C. Eliminating the need for a heating element is not only a significant reduction in cost, but improves overall system-level efficiency. In terms of derating, the MB60 will deliver 40 Watts at 70°C. This is a significant advantage over the competition. All models are CE marked to the low voltage directive and approved to the Medical standards of IEC60601-1, 3rd Edition with 2xMOPP.

These models feature safeguards, such as, Hiccup Mode for Over Load Protection and Short Circuit Protection. In addition, they have integrated Over Voltage Protection and Over Temperature Protection for additional defensive precaution. The MB60’s proven track record of delivering uncompromising performance will soon be available for IEC Class II input applications that Save & Sustain Lives.

What is IEC Class I and Class II?

The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) sets international safety standards for the electrotechnology space. Class I and Class II refer to a power supply’s internal construction and electrical insulation. These standards were developed to protect the user from electric shock.

IEC Class I input models have basic insulation and must incorporate a protective earth connection to mitigate the risk of electric shock.

IEC Class II input models feature additional safety precautions, such as double insulation or reinforced insulation, thereby eliminating the need for a protective earth connection. Therefore, Class II input power supplies have a 2-pin input receptacle [IEC60320 C8 or C18 type] instead of the 3-pin input receptacles found on Class I input models.

There is either a double or reinforced insulation barrier between the input and the output. Many mobile phone chargers and laptop power supplies are Class II. Products designed with Class II insulation often are labeled as ‘Class II’, ‘double insulated’ or will have the concentric square symbol on the safety label.Class II Concentric Square Symbol II External Power Supply
